Drug Uses
Imitrex is an antimigraine drug used for acute intermittent relief of migraine attacks with or without aura. Imitrex tablets help to relieve headache at all stages of migraine attacks. However, they are advised to take at the first sign of an approaching migraine.
Besides the fact that Imitrex tablets effectively relieve migraine headache, they help to reduce hypersensitivity to light and noise and alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms of migraine (nausea, vomiting).
The standard dose of Imitrex for acute treatment of migraine is 50 mg. If a single dose of Imitrex 50mg is not enough to relieve migraine symptoms, the next dose can be increased to an Imitrex 100mg tablet. Imitrex dose is considered to be optimal when helps to relieve migraine attacks within 30 minutes after oral administration.
Most patients manage to relieve migraine symptoms within 2 hours after using the first dose of Imitrex. If migraine headache does not disappear or returns in 2 hours after the use of Imitrex tablets, one more dose of Imitrex can be used for the relief of migraine attacks. Within 24 hours, several doses of Imitrex can be used, but the total daily dose of this antimigraine drug should not exceed 200mg.
Missed dose
Do not take Imitrex tablets for longer than prescribed and do not double Imitrex dose to make up the missed one.
More Information
Imitrex tablets should only be prescribed as a monotherapy of migraine and should not be used to treat usual headache, cluster headache or to prevent migraine attacks.
Storage
Imitrex antimigraine agent must be protected from bright light and stored at controlled room temperature up to 30°C.
